Mr. Dilip Kumar Sharma is a seasoned mining professional with over two decades of experience in underground coal operations. He began his career in 2003 as a Management Trainee on India’s first Continuous Miner Project at Anjan Hill. Over the years, he has held key operational and leadership roles across major subsidiaries such as SECL, SCCL, WCL, and ECL, gaining deep insight into India’s diverse coal deposits and mining challenges.
During his tenure at Joy Mining (JMS), Mr. Sharma played a pivotal role in transforming underground mining practices in India. He introduced the Bolter Miner Package for longwall gate road drivage, high-capacity Continuous Miners capable of cutting up to 5.5 meters, and high-performance road headers. He also pioneered the Nevid Angle method for depillaring long-standing pillars, a breakthrough that unlocked previously inaccessible coal reserves and improved operational efficiency.
Under his leadership, JMS achieved remarkable growth, with annual turnover increasing from INR 90 crores to over INR 1,000 crores. The workforce expanded from 300 to nearly 2,000 employees, and operations spread across more than 25 projects, including four commercial coal blocks and two underground MDOs under Coal India Limited. Mr. Sharma also established a state-of-the-art manufacturing and repair facility, secured accreditation as a Mine Planning and Preparing Agency, and implemented advanced strata monitoring technologies to enhance safety standards.
Currently serving as Director of UGM, MMPL, and other enterprises, Mr. Sharma continues to drive innovation in mechanized underground mining. His leadership is defined by a commitment to safety, sustainability, and technological excellence.
He holds a First Class Mine Manager’s Competency Certificate and an MBA in Total Quality Management. Mr. Sharma is also a Life Member of MGMI, IMMA, ISRM, and the Institution of Engineers, reflecting his dedication to professional growth and industry advancement.
Mr. Rajiv Ganeriwala, Chairman of MMPL has led the company from a small regional contractor into India’s foremost integrated underground mining group. A Civil Engineering graduate from BIT Mesra, he has over four decades of leadership in underground mining and has been instrumental in indigenizing India’s shaft-sinking, drilling, and mine-development technologies reducing dependence on foreign contractors.
Under his direction, MMPL has executed some of the country’s most challenging underground projects. These include the Kottadih underground mine under Indo-French collaboration, the installation of Asia’s largest fan draft ventilation system, and the pioneering of India’s first 2 km underground man-riding system. His practical engineering acumen also led to the design of a 100-foot floodlight tower that improved open-cast productivity across multiple coalfields.
Over the last 40 years, Mr. Ganeriwala has built MMPL into a fully integrated mining house with end-to-end capabilities from exploration and shaft sinking to integrated MDO operations. MMPL today operates across 50 projects nationwide with a workforce of over 3,000 employees.
Mr .Ganeriwala serves on the boards of MMPL, UGM, MAPL, Maiki South amongst others.
